Location details

Shelly Beach has a rocky shore with excellent rock platforms for fieldwork studies. The activities generally begin in Shelly Park, with a majority of the day spent on the rock platforms south of Shelly Beach Ocean Pools.

It is recommended that sturdy footwear be worn. As the site is very exposed, please encourage students to carry wind/rain proof jackets. As there is a lot of glare from the sand and water, please encourage sun safety practices. Students are in close proximity to the water most of the day. There will be no swimming.

The greatest potential risks to students are large and unexpected waves and sharps on the beach when conducting fieldwork. Blue-ringed octopus may occur in rock pools.

It is important that students stay in view of teachers and within any specified boundaries. Vigilance is required from all participants.

The group is very likely to encounter members of the public. Supervising teachers need to be aware of where students are at all times. Child protection measures and supervision will be required when students access public toilets.

Once your booking is confirmed, we will email you a draft risk assessment and management plan to use in the preparation of your own plan. This plan details risks on excursion and controls to minimise them on the day.

There are toilet facilities at Shelly Park, in the Shelly Beach Pavillion. Students should not access public toilets alone, they should take a buddy with them.

Students can refill water bottles at taps at Shelly Park.
