Living systems

Stage 4 Science

Close up of a student’s hands holding a small plastic container that has three blue and cream coloured soldier crabs inside. The student is standing in mud.

Students participate in hands-on fieldwork to examine the role, structure and function of living systems and their components. In a local ecosystem, students identify biotic and abiotic components, measure and record abiotic factors and investigate interactions.

Site options include

Mangrove trees growing along the edge of clear, shallow water with reflections of the branches and leaves on the surface.

Learning activities
  • Measure and record abiotic factors of one or two ecosystems
  • Record the flora and fauna observed during fieldwork; identify introduced species
  • Complete food chains relevant to the ecosystem
  • Use sampling techniques to complete an investigation about living things
  • Observe animals as relevant to the ecosystem, e.g., bird watching, dipnetting for macroinvertebrates, invertebrate search, crab search
Syllabus outcomes

Science 7-10 Syllabus (2018)
