Bush Christmas
Science and technology, geography and creative arts
Celebrate the festive season with a uniquely Australian twist! This hands-on and heartwarming incursion invites Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 students to explore how we can care for our native wildlife and environment at Christmas time. Through storytelling, art, and action, children learn that giving back to nature is one of the most meaningful gifts of all.
Each student prints a native animal onto a calico bag. Each participating school receives a native plant to help improve habitat in their school grounds.
Early stage 1 syllabus outcomes
- STE-SCI-01- identifies and describes characteristics of living things, properties of materials, and movement
- STE-PQU-01- poses questions based on observations to collect data
- HSE-GEO-01- identifies and locates places people connect with, using geographical information
- CAE-VIS-01- experiments with and identifies ways materials and techniques are used to represent subject matter and ideas in artworks
Stage 1 syllabus outcomes
- ST1-SCI-01- measures and describes changes in living things, materials, movement, Earth and the sky
- ST1-PQU-01- poses questions based on observations and information to investigate cause and effect
- HS1-GEO-01-describes ways people connect to and care for places, water environments and each other, using geographical information
- CA1-VIS-01- makes artworks using materials and techniques to represent subject matter and ideas, and describes ways artists convey ideas in artworks
Session details
Duration: 75 minutes
Availability: Up to 4 sessions per day (one class per session)
Requirements:
- an outdoor space for story time with access to a garden (Space must be kept set up and separate from other activities and play areas all day.
- an alternative indoor space is needed in case of bad weather.
- four large tables prepared for craft activities, with protective coverings if required.
- 1–2 adult helpers per session.
- student art aprons, drying racks, pegs, and coloured pencils.
- access to a wet area for students to wash hands and for EEC staff to clean between sessions.
